LTC vs. FID in Massachusetts: Which License Do You Need?
In Massachusetts you need a state license to buy or own a firearm. The two licenses – the License to Carry (LTC) and the Firearms Identification Card (FID) – cover different firearms. Here’s how to tell which one you need.
License to Carry (LTC)
- For applicants 21 and over.
- Covers all handguns, plus rifles and shotguns – including semi-automatic and large-capacity firearms.
- Also allows carrying a handgun, subject to Massachusetts law and any restrictions on your license.
Firearms Identification Card (FID)
- Covers rifles and shotguns that are not semi-automatic and not large-capacity – for example bolt-action rifles, lever-action rifles, and pump or break-action shotguns.
- Does not cover handguns or any semi-automatic firearm.
- A common choice for hunters and anyone who only wants traditional long guns.
Which one should I get?
- Want a handgun, or a semi-automatic rifle or shotgun? You need an LTC.
- Only want a bolt-action rifle or pump shotgun? An FID covers it.
- Not sure yet? Most people choose the LTC because it covers the widest range of firearms.
How to apply
Both licenses start the same way: complete a Massachusetts-approved firearms safety course, then apply with the police department in the town where you live.
