How to Buy a Gun in Massachusetts
Buying a firearm in Massachusetts takes a few more steps than in most states, but it’s straightforward once you know the process. Here’s how it works, from getting licensed to taking your firearm home from our store in Walpole.
1. Get the right Massachusetts license
You need a Massachusetts firearms license before you can buy a gun from a dealer. There are two:
- License to Carry (LTC) – for applicants 21 and over. Required for all handguns and for any semi-automatic rifle or shotgun.
- Firearms Identification Card (FID) – covers rifles and shotguns that are not semi-automatic and not large-capacity (for example, bolt-action rifles and pump or break-action shotguns).

2. Take a Massachusetts-approved safety course
First-time applicants must complete a state-approved firearms safety course, which now includes live-fire training. We teach the Massachusetts LTC course right here in Walpole – see upcoming dates on our LTC Course page.
3. Apply with your local police department
Licenses are issued by the police department in the town where you live. Bring your course certificate, completed application and the fee. The department will take fingerprints, run background checks, and may interview you. Processing times vary by town, so apply early.
4. Choose a Massachusetts-compliant firearm
Massachusetts limits which firearms dealers can sell. Handguns sold by dealers must be approved for sale in Massachusetts, magazines are limited to 10 rounds for most firearms, and certain semi-automatic firearms and features are restricted. 5. Buy in store (or online for in-store pickup)
